HDR on iPhone & Android

Ultra HDR images work on most modern phones — but there are a few things to know to get the best experience.

iPhone (iOS)

iPhones with OLED displays (iPhone 12 and later) support HDR natively. Ultra HDR images with Apple gain maps will automatically display with extended brightness in:

Photos app — Full HDR rendering
Safari — HDR images on websites
Messages — Send HDR photos to other iPhone users

Tip: Make sure your display brightness is above 50% for the best HDR effect. In very bright environments, HDR highlights become especially impressive.

Android

Android 14+ supports Ultra HDR (gain map JPEG) natively. Supported devices include:

Google Pixel 7+ — Full support in Photos and Chrome
Samsung Galaxy S24+ — Supported in Gallery app
Chrome browser — Renders gain map JPEGs on HDR displays

Desktop

Mac with XDR display — Safari and Preview show HDR
Chrome on HDR monitors — Supports gain map rendering
